Honor Roll: Courthouse Grounds, Hudson, New York

Columbia County, New York, is about 120 miles north of New York City. The county seat is the City of Hudson. In 1609 when Henry Hudson, an English explorer sailing for the Dutch, discovered the river named after him, an accident forced him to stop at what is now known as Columbia County and search for food and supplies. As the Dutch developed New Amsterdam (Manhattan Island) and Beverwijck (Albany), which became the center of the fur trade, they also established settlements along the Hudson river to supply the ships operated by the traders.

The City of Hudson was established in 1785 and settled primarily by whalers and merchants from Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Providence (Rhode Island). They turned the city into a busy port. During the 19th century it grew as a factory town with textile manufacturing, brickyards, and Allen Paper Car Wheel Works, which were really cast iron railroad wheels. Legally-tolerated prostitution caused Hudson to become known as the "little town with a big red light district" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Several honor rolls may be found on the grounds of the Columbia County Family Court, which is located at 401 Union Street.

  1. So funny that you wrote about Hudson today---our good friends just had a granddaughter whose name is Callie Hudson (her middle name is Hudson). They gave her that name because the family has roots in Hudson, NY! I will share this post with them. :)
